There is 50 years of history to Elf since the debut of the first generation in 1959. It is also the first model as a Japanese full cab-over-engine truck. In 1970, The first 3 ton truck in Japan was introduced. In the next year, the model was installed with small diesel engine, which made a smash hit in the market and 'Isuzu's light-duty diesel trucks' developed into a successful worldwide standard. In 1978 the sales of the model exceeded 1 million units. The next year was followed by the introduction of a new engine starting system Quick-on. In 1984, Isuzu achieved their goal of switching all their production to equip direct injection diesel engine. White colored Elf was introduced in the same year.
Since 1990, Elf starts to develop into a model in focus of environment, economic performance, safety, and comfort. In 1993, the OHC turbo engine. was adopted. The beginning of a new era - Developing vehicles that are gentle on people and to the environment. In 1999, Isuzu introduced the Clutch Free System that made driving less stressful than it was. after 2001, idling stop mechanism became a standard feature. Common rail system was adopted for the first time on a small sized truck in Japan. Also, PM converter was installed, and by clearing the domestic emission regulation, all those features made Elf a more environment friendly truck. The present model since 2006 has cleared the strict domestic emission regulation and fuel efficiency standards. Elf is regarded as a innovative light-duty truck leading the era at all times.
